Zentrum für Hirnforschung
Medizinische Universität Wien
The CBR is devoted to promote research and teaching that leads to a better understanding of the normal and diseased central nervous system.
The CBR was founded in 1999 and quickly became a core facility of the Medical University of Vienna. Different departments of the University sent their leading neuroscientists to form the new CBR together with the recently recruited faculty. The Center is rapidly expanding. At present it consists of five departments (Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Department of Cognitive Neurobiology, Dept. of Neuroimmunology, Dept. of Neuronal Cell Biology and Dept. of Neurophysiology). In addition the CBR hosts a growing number of independent junior and guest research groups all lead by exceptional scientist who are supported by the Center and by extramural funds.
Research of the CBR focuses on synaptic transmission, gene expression and non-neuronal cells of the CNS in health and disease, such as chronic pain and epilepsy, as well as inflammatory
